Abstract

Objectives : The binge eaters are increasing rapidly since 1990s in Korea. The purpose of this study was to identify the level of binge eating, eating attitude, self-esteem and depression in female binge eaters.

Methods : Study subjects were 44 women who showed over 17 on the EAT - 26 among binge eaters who visited eating disorders clinic M. Data were collected by the use of Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI), the Rosenberg¡¯s Self-Esteem Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) from June 1999 to May 2000 and analyzed using SPSS WIN for Pearson correlation and ANOVA.

Results : 1) The mean score of EDI as 10.14, self-esteem 24.12, and depression 17.98. The mean scores of drive for thinness, ineffectiveness, interoceptive awareness, perfectionism and interpersonal distrust subscales of EDI were in the same level as American binge eaters but body dissatisfaction and maturity fear subscales were slightly higher than those of American. 2) Binge eating had significant correlations with binge eating and drive for thinness, body dissatisfaction, ineffectiveness, interoceptive awareness, interpersonal distrust subscales of EDI, self-esteem and depression. There were significant relation between self-esteem and depression. And self-esteem and depression had significant relations with every variable except body dissatisfaction and perfectionism. 3) The level of binge eating differed by diagnosis, the level of depression differed by age and duration of illness. drive for thinness and body dissatisfaction differed by diagnosis, ineffectiveness differed by age, perfectionism differed by job and duration of illness, and interpersonal distrust and maturity fear differed by duration of illness.

Conclusions : Binge eating had significant relationships with self-esteem, depression, and drive for thinness, ineffectiveness and interoceptive awareness of EDI.
